“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place...I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them” (Elloitt Erwitt). In the final photography project, I explored the theme of family traits, and how even though my subjects were from the same family lineage, their traits (nose, eyes, etc) were distinctly different, and why that might be so. Family traits have always been interesting to me, the idea that two people could come from the exact same genes and multiple outcomes are what come of it, interests me in how genetics work. Comparing and contrasting two family members side by side is an idea that I emulated from Lorna Simmons. My approach to these photographs was different from hers seeing as though Simmons take photos of women in ways to express social injustices that have happened against them, she also uses captions to project the point of her photograph. While emulating how she portrays her photos when ready to be viewed, I used the idea of using the black and white photo. Influenced by the way Lorna Simmons uses comparisons in her photography, I used the same technique to photograph genetics and how people from the same genes look different.
